[Sacramento, Calif., July 21, 2020] — Viii publicly owned electric utilities and water agencies took top honors in the 2020 CMUA Resources Efficiency & Community Service Awards for outstanding projects advancing best practices and innovative ideas in the industry. Selected past a panel of judges, the first-place winners include projects and programs from Alameda Municipal Ability, Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District, Kirkwood Meadows Public Utility District, Los Angeles Section of Water and Power, Mesa Water ®, Modesto Irrigation District, Redding Electric Utility, and SMUD. A console of judges identified the following award winners:
- 1st place in the Large-size utility category
SMUD: SMUD Energy StorageSharesSMUD's Free energy StorageShares program enables commercial customers to maximize the benefit from their investment in energy storage while minimizing SMUD's cost to upgrade or deploy new infrastructure for the grid. In this beginning-of-its-kind plan in the U.Due south., eligible commercial customers make an upfront investment to SMUD for program participation and, in exchange, receive a monthly on-nib credit for a 10-yr term, reflecting the savings an onsite battery would have provided for need charge reduction. Kirkwood Meadows Public Utility District: Renewable Electricity and Propane Offset ProgramThe voluntary Renewable Electricity and Propane Commencement Program gives KMPUD customers the opportunity to apply 100% renewable electricity and start 100% of the greenhouse gases emitted from propane use. Each October this voluntary program is offered for one month, giving customers in the ski-resort customs the opportunity to offset their energy use for the previous 12 months by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for electricity apply and carbon offsets for propane utilise. The judges for these awards were Tim Haines, old deputy general manager of the State Water Contractors and by CMUA Board of Governors member; Dr. Greg Pierce, associate director of the UCLA Luskin Centre for Innovation; Elif Tasar of the UC Berkeley Energy Institute at Haas; and V. John White, executive director of the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies (CEERT) based in Sacramento.
